Uganda Safari with Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Rhino Trekking and Shoebill Safari
Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, is one of the few destinations in the world where you can enjoy an incredible combination of mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, rhino trekking, and Shoebill birding in one unforgettable safari. Blessed with lush rainforests, expansive wetlands, rolling savannahs, and rich biodiversity, Uganda offers wildlife enthusiasts a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Africa’s most iconic animals and one of its rarest birds.
Whether you are a wildlife photographer, birdwatcher, adventure traveler, or nature lover, this safari showcases the very best of Uganda’s natural wonders while supporting conservation and local communities.
Why Choose This Uganda Safari?
Unlike many African destinations that specialize in only one type of safari, Uganda allows you to combine several world-class wildlife experiences into a single itinerary.
Safari Highlights
- Mountain gorilla trekking
- Chimpanzee tracking
- Rhino trekking on foot
- Shoebill tracking by canoe
- Scenic rainforest hikes
- Wetland birdwatching
- Beautiful countryside drives
- Authentic cultural encounters
This combination makes Uganda one of Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
5
The highlight of this safari is trekking endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Your day begins with a briefing by rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority before hiking through the dense rainforest in search of a habituated gorilla family.
The trek may last anywhere from one to eight hours depending on the gorillas’ location. Once you find them, you’ll spend one magical hour observing their natural behaviors—watching silverbacks protect their families, playful juveniles climb through the forest, and mothers care for their infants.
This unforgettable encounter is widely regarded as one of the greatest wildlife experiences on Earth.
Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale National Park
4
Known as the Primate Capital of East Africa, Kibale National Park is home to more than 1,500 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species.
After an early morning briefing, you’ll follow experienced guides through the rainforest to locate a chimpanzee community. Once found, you’ll spend an hour observing these intelligent primates as they feed, groom, communicate, and swing through the forest canopy.
Kibale is also one of Uganda’s finest birdwatching destinations and can be combined with a visit to the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary.
Rhino Trekking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
40
Uganda’s only wild rhinos can be found at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
Unlike traditional game drives, rhino trekking takes place on foot under the supervision of experienced rangers.
Walking quietly through the bush before encountering these magnificent animals at close—but safe—distances creates a thrilling and educational conservation experience.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary plays a vital role in Uganda’s efforts to restore rhino populations to the country’s national parks.
Shoebill Safari at Mabamba Swamp
6
One of the most exciting birdwatching experiences in Africa is searching for the prehistoric-looking Shoebill at Mabamba Swamp on the shores of Lake Victoria.
Your adventure begins aboard a traditional canoe as expert local guides paddle through narrow papyrus channels in search of this elusive bird.
The Shoebill is one of Africa’s most sought-after bird species and is famous for its massive shoe-shaped bill, striking blue-grey plumage, and remarkable hunting skills. In addition to the Shoebill, visitors may see:
- African Jacanas
- Malachite Kingfishers
- Purple Herons
- African Fish Eagles
- Pied Kingfishers
- Numerous waterbirds and wetland species
This experience is a must for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers alike.
