What Vaccines Are Required to Travel to Africa?
The vaccines required for travel to Africa depend on which country you are visiting, where you are traveling from, your planned activities, and your personal health history. There is no single set of vaccines required for the entire continent.
For most travelers, some vaccines are recommended, while a few may be required by certain countries.
1. Yellow Fever Vaccine (Most Common Requirement)
The Yellow Fever vaccine is the most commonly required travel vaccine in Africa.
Many African countries require travelers arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission to present an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), often called the “Yellow Card.”
Countries where proof of vaccination may be required or recommended include:
- Uganda
- Kenya
- Rwanda
- Tanzania (depending on travel history)
- Ghana
- Nigeria
- Cameroon
- Ethiopia
- Zambia
- Angola
Always verify the latest entry requirements for your destination before departure.
2. Routine Vaccinations
Before traveling, make sure you are up to date with routine vaccinations such as:
- Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
- Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Td/Tdap)
- Polio
- Chickenpox (Varicella)
- Seasonal Influenza
- COVID-19 (where applicable and based on current guidance)
3. Hepatitis A
Recommended for most travelers to Africa.
Hepatitis A can be transmitted through contaminated food or water, so vaccination is advised even if you plan to stay in quality hotels.
4. Hepatitis B
Often recommended for travelers who may:
- Stay for extended periods
- Require medical treatment abroad
- Have close contact with local communities
- Engage in activities with potential exposure to blood or bodily fluids
5. Typhoid
Recommended for travelers who:
- Visit rural areas
- Eat local food
- Travel for extended periods
- Participate in adventure travel
6. Rabies
Rabies vaccination may be recommended if you plan to:
- Spend significant time outdoors
- Work with animals
- Visit remote areas
- Stay for an extended period
7. Meningococcal Vaccine
This vaccine is mainly recommended for travelers visiting parts of the African meningitis belt, particularly during the dry season.
It is generally not required for standard East African safari itineraries.
8. Cholera
A cholera vaccine may be recommended for travelers visiting areas experiencing outbreaks or those with higher exposure risk.
Most safari travelers do not routinely require it.
Malaria Prevention
5
There is no vaccine routinely used for malaria prevention for most international travelers.
Instead, healthcare providers may recommend:
- Prescription antimalarial medication
- Insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin
- Long-sleeved clothing in the evenings
- Sleeping under insecticide-treated mosquito nets where appropriate
The appropriate malaria medication depends on your destination and medical history, so consult your healthcare provider before traveling.
When Should You Get Vaccinated?
Ideally, visit a travel health clinic 4–8 weeks before your departure.
This allows enough time for:
- Vaccines to become effective
- Multi-dose vaccine schedules if needed
- Travel health advice tailored to your itinerary
If your trip is sooner, it’s still worth consulting a travel clinic, as many vaccines can still provide protection even when given closer to departure.
Additional Health Tips for Africa
While traveling:
- Drink bottled or purified water where appropriate.
- Wash your hands regularly.
- Protect yourself from mosquito bites.
- Carry a basic travel first-aid kit.
- Purchase comprehensive travel insurance.
- Follow local public health advice.
Traveling to East Africa
For popular safari destinations such as Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania, many travelers are advised to consider:
- Yellow Fever (depending on entry requirements and travel history)
- Hepatitis A
- Typhoid
- Routine vaccinations
- Malaria prevention where recommended
Requirements and recommendations can change, so always check the latest guidance from your destination country’s health authorities and consult a qualified travel medicine provider before your trip.
